Gideon Bakare, President of the Federal Government College, Idoani Alumni Association (Akure Mega Chapter), has called on governments at all levels to prioritize the continuous training and retraining of teachers. Speaking at the association’s 2025 end-of-year party and award night in Akure, Bakare emphasized that investing in professional development is critical for securing the future of Nigeria’s education system.
Bakare identified the lack of consistent training as a primary obstacle to sustainable educational quality in the country. He argued that when teachers are equipped with modern skills, they are better positioned to impart high-quality knowledge to their students. Regular training, he noted, encourages educators to embrace innovative teaching methods and new ways of thinking that are essential for today’s learning environment.
Furthermore, Bakare urged the government to safeguard every child’s right to quality education by ensuring adequate funding and investment in the sector. He stressed that concentrating on developing teachers’ skills would directly improve student outcomes. He also highlighted the alumni association’s contributions to the education sector in Ondo and Ekiti States, citing various projects at Federal Government College Idoani as evidence of their commitment.
The neglect of teacher quality has profound economic implications. When educators lack the skills to teach effectively, the workforce enters the market without the critical thinking and technical abilities required for a modern economy. This skills gap stifles innovation, lowers productivity, and ultimately acts as a drag on the nation’s GDP, trapping the country in a cycle of underdevelopment and high unemployment.
