Nigeria is reaching a critical turning point in its decades-long battle against insurgency and violent extremism. In a significant update on the nation’s security situation, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, revealed that the federal government currently holds over 5,000 terror suspects in detention. More importantly, Ribadu highlighted a major breakthrough in the judicial arm of counter-terrorism: a remarkable 84 percent conviction rate for prosecuted cases.

A Judicial Shift Against Extremism
For years, the Nigerian government has faced scrutiny over the lengthy detention of suspects and the perceived slow pace of legal proceedings. However, recent data suggests a systemic shift toward efficiency and accountability. The high conviction rate is a testament to the improved collaboration between the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Ministry of Justice, and international partners. These efforts have focused on building airtight cases that ensure violent offenders are removed from society through a transparent legal process.

The “Kainji Mass Trials,” now in their seventh phase, have been instrumental in this progress. These trials handle backlogs of suspects captured during military operations across the North-East and North-West. By prioritizing the rule of law, the Nigerian government aims to demonstrate that its fight against groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP is not just a military engagement but a commitment to justice.

Decisive Blows to Terror Leadership
The NSA also emphasized that the quality of arrests has improved alongside the quantity. Recently, security agencies successfully “decapitated” the leadership of the Ansaru terrorist group—an Al-Qaeda affiliate—with the capture of its top commander, Abu Bara’a, and his deputy, Mallam Mahmuda. Ribadu described these arrests as some of the most decisive blows against terrorism in recent years.

These high-profile captures are part of a broader strategy to disrupt the financing and logistical networks of terror groups. By targeting leadership, the government is effectively dismantling the “sleeper cells” that have long plagued urban centers and remote forest reserves like the Kainji National Park.

The Economic Dividend of Stability
The aggressive prosecution of terror suspects and the resulting increase in safety are projected to serve as a catalyst for Nigeria’s economic recovery. According to SBM Intelligence, the financial toll of insecurity has been staggering, with the firm noting that “kidnappers collected at least ₦2.57 billion as ransom from their victims” between mid-2024 and mid-2025 alone. By securing trade routes and reducing the “ransom economy,” the government is directly alleviating a massive hidden tax on Nigerian households and small businesses.

Furthermore, improved security is expected to lower the overhead costs for major industries. Insights from Halogen Group suggest that a safer environment allows for “sustainable security” that protects both people and property, enabling businesses to expand into previously volatile regions. As noted in their security outlook, a secure nation “contributes to a safer and more secure future for our country,” providing the stability necessary for long-term capital investment and infrastructure development.

Ultimately, these judicial victories signal to the global community that Nigeria is serious about addressing its “grey list” status with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). By proving it can penalize those involved in terror financing, the nation is positioned to attract higher levels of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). As the NSA noted, the combination of military dominance and judicial accountability is creating a foundation for economic resilience, turning security from a cost center into a growth engine for the continent’s largest economy.
