UN Says Guinea-Bissau Must End Arbitrary Detentions After Coup

The United Nations has called on the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to bring an end to arbitrary detentions and uphold fundamental human rights following last month’s military coup that has plunged the West African nation into political turmoil. The appeal comes as fresh international concern grows over the treatment of opposition figures and others held in detention without clear charges or legal recourse.

On Tuesday, six opposition figures were released by the military authorities, an action the UN human rights office described as an encouraging first step. These individuals were closely associated with Domingos Simões Pereira, leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), the country’s main opposition party. Pereira himself remains in custody after being detained in the wake of the coup.

Despite welcoming these releases, the UN stressed that much more needs to be done. In a statement, a spokesman for the United Nations Human Rights Office said that all arbitrary detentions must cease and that those arrested solely for exercising their civil and political rights should be freed immediately and unconditionally. The rights office also condemned intimidation, physical attacks on human rights defenders, and any restrictions on freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly.

The army seized power on 26 November, ousting President Umaro Sissoco Embaló just days after national elections were held. The military subsequently suspended the electoral process and declared a one-year transitional period under its control, citing concerns over stability and governance. The takeover has been widely condemned by regional and international partners as a breach of democratic norms and constitutional order.

In addition to calls from the United Nations, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has demanded the release of all political detainees and rejected the military’s transitional plan. The regional bloc insists that constitutional order be restored without delay and that the electoral commission be allowed to complete and publish the results of the 23 November vote.

The United Kingdom has also expressed strong condemnation of the coup and urged Guinea-Bissau’s leaders to return to constitutional governance, release political prisoners and respect democratic processes. London has commended the mediation efforts of ECOWAS and the African Union in seeking a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Human rights advocates warn that continued detentions without due process risk creating a climate of fear that undermines political dialogue and reconciliation. Families of several detainees still lack information about the whereabouts or legal status of their loved ones, a situation that may amount to enforced disappearance under international law.

The events in Guinea-Bissau reflect broader challenges facing many countries in West Africa, where the fragility of democratic institutions and recurrent military interventions have made political stability elusive. For now, the eyes of the international community remain fixed on Bissau, urging respect for human rights and a swift return to constitutional order.
