Vedanta Resources Ltd., the diversified mining group chaired by Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal, is in advanced discussions with international banks over a $500 million financing package aimed at refinancing debt and boosting copper output at its Konkola mine in Zambia. The proposed facility would provide the company with fresh liquidity while supporting one of its most strategically important overseas assets.

The loan, expected to run for four years with a weighted average life of about two and a half years, is being structured to refinance higher-cost borrowings and fund capital expenditure at Konkola Copper Mines. Pricing is reported at roughly 425 basis points over the benchmark SOFR rate. If finalised early next year, the facility will give Vedanta more flexibility as it continues to reduce its debt load and invest in expansion.

Citigroup, Barclays, Mashreq, Standard Chartered, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. are leading the lending syndicate. About $200 million of the loan is earmarked to retire older debt, while the remainder will fund development at Konkola. To secure the deal, lenders have discussed tying repayments to brand fees from Vedanta’s Indian operating companies, including Vedanta Ltd. and Hindustan Zinc, guaranteed by subsidiary Twin Star Holdings. Brand fee income reached $386 million in the year ending March 2025, providing a predictable revenue stream to support debt servicing.

The proposed financing is part of a wider effort by Vedanta to streamline its balance sheet after several years of heavy borrowing. Gross debt has fallen from $9.1 billion in 2022 to about $4.7 billion by June 2025, thanks to asset sales, refinancing, and equity raises. Average bond maturities have lengthened from around three to nearly five years, leaving roughly $1.2 billion due over the next 30 months, including $800 million in external obligations.

Over the past year, Vedanta secured around $2.2 billion through bank loans and rupee-denominated non-convertible debentures, cutting interest costs by approximately 130 basis points. The group also raised $1 billion through a qualified institutional placement and an additional $400 million from other sources.

Vedanta operates across India, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, with businesses spanning oil and gas, base metals, aluminium, steel, power, and glass substrates. The company has also signalled interest in semiconductors and display glass. Revenue for the year ended March 31, 2025, rose 6 percent to $18.2 billion, while EBITDA climbed 16 percent to $5.5 billion.

Last month, Vedanta announced plans to invest $1.5 billion to increase copper output at Konkola by 2031, underscoring Zambia’s importance to Agarwal’s global strategy. The move reflects growing demand for copper driven by electrification and infrastructure spending worldwide, with Zambia remaining a cornerstone of Vedanta’s African operations.
