Rasik Kantaria, a discreet yet influential figure in Kenya’s financial landscape for more than three decades, has officially entered the ranks of global dollar billionaires, becoming the first known Kenyan businessman to achieve the milestone through private enterprise.

Kantaria, founder and chairman of Prime Bank Limited and a key shareholder in the Mauritius-based FMB Capital Holdings PLC, has seen his wealth soar on the back of a dramatic rally in the bank’s share price this year. Industry documents and valuations reviewed by analysts indicate that his fortune has now climbed past the $1-billion mark, placing him firmly among Africa’s wealth elite.

The foundation of his newly recognised status can be traced to 1995, when Kantaria partnered with Malawian banking magnate Hitesh Anadkat to establish First Merchant Bank Limited in Blantyre. From those modest origins, the institution evolved into First Capital Bank, the flagship subsidiary of FMB Capital Holdings, and gradually expanded its presence across Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana.

FMB Capital has grown into a regional banking group known for conservative lending and strong corporate governance. Those qualities helped fuel one of the most remarkable market runs in African finance this year. The group’s shares have surged more than 500 percent since January, lifting the company to the top of the Malawi Stock Exchange by market value.

Kantaria holds 525 million shares in the group, a 21.36 percent stake that was worth roughly $168 million at the start of the year. That stake is now valued at just over $1 billion, marking an extraordinary increase of more than $850 million in less than 12 months.

The valuation does not yet account for his substantial interests in Prime Bank Limited or Prime Capital Holdings, meaning his true net worth is likely significantly higher.

Despite his commercial influence, Kantaria has always maintained a quiet public presence. Colleagues often describe him as patient and methodical, avoiding unnecessary attention while steadily expanding his investments. Beyond banking, his portfolio includes insurance, real estate, manufacturing and tourism assets.

He has also been active in community work through the Rotary movement and has received honours recognising his public service, including a Head of State’s Commendation from President William Ruto.

Kantaria’s rise underscores the increasing strength of East Africa’s financial sector, where homegrown institutions have matured into regional powerhouses. It also marks a symbolic moment for Kenya, a country long associated with influential business families but without a verified private-sector billionaire until now.

His accession into the billionaire ranks signals the growing weight of Kenyan capital in wider African markets, and a reminder that fortunes built on solid fundamentals can quietly reshape economic history.
