Amazon to Invest €16bn in Germany in 2027, Plans 3,000 New Jobs

Amazon has announced plans to invest more than €16 billion ($18 billion) in Germany in 2027, expanding its cloud computing, artificial intelligence, satellite internet, logistics and media businesses as competition for technology infrastructure intensifies.

The company announced the investment on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the German government’s Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin. The plan builds on more than €100 billion Amazon says it has invested in the country since 2010.

According to Amazon’s announcement, €4.8 billion of the planned spending will go towards expanding Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Frankfurt cloud region and artificial intelligence infrastructure to meet growing demand for digital services.

The investment comes as technology companies increase spending on data centres and computing capacity to support the development and use of AI. AWS provides cloud computing services to businesses and other organisations, making its infrastructure a key part of Amazon’s technology operations.

Amazon will also invest in its Leo satellite broadband network, which is designed to provide internet access to homes, schools, businesses and public institutions in areas where conventional networks may not offer adequate coverage.

The company said the investment would extend beyond technology infrastructure to its logistics operations and entertainment business.

Its logistics expansion is expected to support more than 3,000 additional jobs in Germany, including through projects involving fulfilment centres in Zweibrücken and Könnern. Amazon is also modernising existing facilities, with some projects scheduled for completion in 2027 and others continuing into 2028.

The company plans to expand its Prime Video production activities in Germany and establish a second robotics and artificial intelligence research laboratory in Berlin, increasing its research presence in the German capital.

Amazon’s announcement comes after a €10 billion investment commitment made in June 2024 to expand its German cloud infrastructure and logistics network, including €8.8 billion earmarked for AWS data centres.

The latest plan further strengthens Germany’s position within Amazon’s European operations, combining investment in digital infrastructure with employment, research and content production.

Amazon Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer David Zapolsky said the company viewed Germany as an important centre for innovation and business growth. He said the additional investment was intended to give German businesses, communities and creators access to infrastructure and tools to compete and expand.

German officials welcomed the announcement as a sign of investor confidence in the country’s economic and technological prospects.

However, the €16 billion figure represents planned investment for 2027 rather than money already spent. Its impact will depend on how the projects are implemented, the jobs ultimately created and the extent to which the expanded infrastructure supports businesses and economic activity.

The investment also reflects a wider contest among major technology companies to expand computing capacity and secure a stronger position in the fast-growing artificial intelligence market.

For Germany, the challenge will be to translate the commitment into lasting economic benefits through employment, technological development and stronger digital infrastructure.
