As Nigeria joins the global community to mark World Teachers’ Day 2026, education stakeholders have called on the Federal Government to back annual celebrations with concrete improvements in teachers’ salaries, working conditions, and digital training.

The 2026 observance marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO-UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, under the global theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.”

Speaking on the significance of the event, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, emphasized that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence should complement rather than replace educators. She noted that achieving professional excellence requires continuous training, policy support, and structural recognition of teachers’ leadership.

Reaffirming this position, Kizito Kalu, Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), representing National President Audu Titus Amba, urged sustained funding for workplace tools and skills development as classroom demands evolve.

To mark the occasion, the Federal Ministry of Education will host a multi-agency symposium to address key sector challenges and recognize 14 outstanding educators through the newly digitized President’s Teachers’ and Schools Excellence Awards.

Stakeholders maintain, however, that national recognition must translate into lasting policy changes, fair remuneration, and modern learning environments across all state and federal classrooms.
