The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc (IBEDC) has suspended four employees arrested over the alleged vandalism of a high-tension electricity pole in Ikirun, Osun State, as the incident highlights how attacks on critical power infrastructure can leave households and businesses without electricity. The Osun State Police Command arrested six suspects, including four IBEDC personnel, at Eko-Ende Junction on September 1, 2026.

The police said its operatives attached to the Ikirun Division acted on intelligence received at about 6 a.m. and found the suspects allegedly cutting a high-tension pole with a cutting machine powered by a generating set.

The four IBEDC personnel arrested were identified by the police as three company staff members and an IBEDC security guard. Two welders were also arrested. Police said a cutting machine, generating set and welding equipment were recovered from the scene.

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Zungura, ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for detailed investigation. The police said the suspects would face prosecution after the investigation is completed.

IBEDC confirmed the suspension on September 2, 2026, saying the affected employees would remain suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Angela Olanrewaju, IBEDC’s Coordinating Head, Corporate Services, said the company was cooperating with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure a “thorough, transparent and impartial” investigation. She added that the company would take appropriate internal disciplinary action if the allegations were established.

The company also described vandalism of electricity infrastructure as a growing concern, saying damage to critical assets can result in prolonged outages, service disruptions and additional inconvenience for customers.

That consequence is particularly significant in Ikirun, where the police said recurring theft and vandalism of cables and other electrical infrastructure had affected the town and surrounding communities in recent months, leaving areas without electricity.

For households, the impact extends beyond the loss of power. Extended outages can force families to spend more on alternative sources of electricity, while shops, small businesses and other enterprises face disruptions to daily operations.

The case also puts the spotlight on the vulnerability of Nigeria’s electricity distribution network, where equipment theft and vandalism can compound existing supply challenges. Stronger protection of power assets therefore matters not only to distributors such as IBEDC but also to consumers who ultimately bear the cost of disrupted electricity service.

IBEDC urged customers, community leaders and residents to report suspicious activity around electricity infrastructure and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards vandalism, theft and other unethical or criminal conduct.

The allegations against the suspects have not been proven in court.
