Build54 Africa Foundation has opened applications for the 2026 edition of its Academic STEM Research Prizes, inviting undergraduate and postgraduate students across Africa to submit innovative research that addresses real world challenges through science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The annual initiative is designed to identify, reward and amplify outstanding academic research conducted in accredited higher institutions across the continent. According to the foundation, the programme seeks to ensure that promising research does not remain on university shelves after grading but gains the recognition, visibility and support needed to drive meaningful impact.
Applications are currently open and will close on December 1, 2026. Eligible participants include students and recent graduates from recognised African higher institutions who have completed original dissertations, theses, capstone projects or other approved academic research within six STEM disciplines. The competition covers Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and Engineering. Organisers said entries will be assessed for originality, research quality, practical relevance, methodological soundness, sustainability and their potential to contribute to knowledge and solve pressing societal challenges.
As part of the reward structure, winners in the undergraduate category will receive 1,500 dollars, while postgraduate winners will be awarded 2,500 dollars after verification of eligibility. The foundation noted that the number of winners may vary depending on the quality and volume of submissions received in each category.
Build54 said the prizes were established to address a long standing challenge in African universities where thousands of research projects exploring solutions to problems in healthcare, education, agriculture, technology, climate change, infrastructure and economic development receive little attention once they have been graded. As a result, many innovative ideas remain hidden despite their potential to contribute to Africa’s development.
Through the initiative, the foundation hopes to encourage a stronger culture of research excellence by rewarding originality and innovation while giving outstanding student research greater visibility. It also aims to promote practical solutions to societal challenges, connect exceptional researchers with broader opportunities for growth and inspire future generations of scientists, engineers, innovators and problem solvers across the continent.
By elevating academic research beyond the classroom, Build54 believes the programme will help transform how student research is valued in Africa, ensuring groundbreaking ideas receive the recognition, support and platform needed to create lasting impact story.
