Rano Air has temporarily suspended some of its flight operations due to the sharp rise in the cost of aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1. The airline said the increase in fuel prices has made it difficult to continue operating certain routes without suffering major financial losses.
In a statement released on Friday, the airline explained that the price of Jet A1 fuel has increased by more than 300 percent in recent times. According to the company, the sudden rise has placed heavy pressure on its operations and forced management to reduce some services for the time being.
Rano Air stated that the decision was carefully considered before it was announced. The airline noted that many operators in the aviation industry are currently struggling with the high cost of fuel, which remains one of the biggest expenses for airlines.
The company said maintaining some routes had become commercially unsustainable because of the growing operational costs. As a result, it had no choice but to temporarily suspend selected flights until conditions improve.
In the statement, the airline said the increasing fuel cost has affected the entire aviation sector and created serious financial challenges for airlines across the country. It added that the suspension of some routes was necessary to ensure the company continues to provide safe and reliable services on its remaining operations.
Rano Air also apologised to passengers and business partners affected by the development. The airline assured customers that support measures have already been put in place to reduce the inconvenience caused by the flight disruptions.
According to the airline, passengers with existing bookings on affected routes will be assisted through different options, including refunds, rescheduling of flights, and rerouting to alternative services where possible. The airline added that its customer service team has been directed to attend to all affected travellers promptly.
The carrier further explained that the decision was made in the interest of maintaining sustainable operations during the difficult period facing the aviation industry. It stressed that safety and operational stability remain top priorities despite the financial pressure caused by the fuel situation.
Industry observers say the rising cost of aviation fuel has become a major concern for domestic airlines in Nigeria. Many operators have complained in recent months about the increasing expenses involved in running flights, including fuel prices, foreign exchange challenges, maintenance costs, and airport charges.
The development has raised concerns among passengers who may experience fewer flight options and possible increases in ticket prices as airlines continue to battle economic pressures.
Despite the temporary suspension, Rano Air expressed optimism that normal operations would resume once the cost of Jet A1 fuel becomes more stable and financially manageable. The airline thanked passengers for their understanding and patience during the challenging period.
The situation highlights the growing difficulties facing Nigeria’s aviation sector as operators search for ways to survive amid rising operational costs and economic uncertainty.
