The popular Financial Technology (Fintech) firm OPay has announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art cybersecurity laboratory at the University of Calabar (UniCal). A delegation from the firm disclosed this during a strategic visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Offiong, on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in Calabar.
The structural and technical consequence of this project is a significant upgrade to the institution’s digital infrastructure. Mr. Itoro Udo, leader of the OPay delegation, emphasized that the firm is moving beyond promises to implementation, introducing representatives from Hunter Flex Intercoms Construction Company the technical partners tasked with executing the build. This partnership, which began in 2023, is designed to deliver “tangible and impactful” academic resources that align with the rapid evolution of the global fintech and security sectors.
Analytically, the impact on “Student Innovation and Digital Literacy” is expected to be profound. Prof. Offiong noted that the laboratory will position UniCal students ahead of their peers by providing a dedicated space for high-level digital skills and cybersecurity research. To ensure the project’s success, the university has committed to providing all necessary institutional support to meet the delivery timeline.
Furthermore, OPay has extended its partnership to include the sports sector, pledging support for the 2026 Nigerian University Games (NUGA), which UniCal is scheduled to host in August. The Vice Chancellor commended this holistic approach, noting that the university intends to institutionalize the infrastructure gains from the games to benefit future generations of athletes and students.
