A major ownership change is underway at Kenya’s leading media company, Nation Media Group, as the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development has agreed to sell its stake to Taarifa Ltd, a company owned by Tanzanian investor Rostam Azizi. The transaction brings to an end AKFED’s 66-year relationship with NMG, which began in 1959 when the Aga Khan IV founded the company to promote a free and independent press in Kenya.

Taarifa says it plans to support the media group’s next phase of growth, particularly by accelerating its digital transformation. The aim is to strengthen NMG’s connection with audiences while continuing its tradition of public-interest journalism. The transaction is expected to close within three to four months, subject to regulatory approvals in Kenya and other markets where NMG operates.

Importantly, Taarifa confirmed it does not plan to buy out minority shareholders or delist the company from exchanges where it trades, including the Nairobi Securities Exchange. This commitment preserves the public character of the company and provides continuity for existing investors.

For Kenya’s media landscape and broader economy, the ownership change carries multiple implications. NMG is the country’s largest media house, with newspapers, television stations, radio outlets, and digital platforms reaching millions of Kenyans daily. Its editorial direction, commercial strategy, and investment priorities shape not only the media sector but also public discourse and democratic accountability.

The focus on digital transformation reflects the fundamental shifts occurring across global media. Traditional revenue streams from print advertising and circulation are declining, while digital audiences and advertising are growing. NMG has invested in digital platforms, but accelerating this transition requires capital, expertise, and strategic focus that new ownership may bring.

For the East African region, NMG’s reach extends beyond Kenya into Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. Its coverage and commercial operations have regional significance, and any strategic shifts will affect audiences and advertisers across borders. The Tanzanian ownership brings potential for deeper integration across the region’s media markets.

The sale also signals the evolving investment strategy of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. AKFED has been a significant investor in East Africa across multiple sectors, including media, banking, and hospitality. Its exit from NMG after 66 years suggests a strategic reallocation of capital, but does not necessarily indicate diminishing interest in the region.

For investors, the transaction provides a test of regulatory processes and market reception. The Nairobi Securities Exchange will monitor the deal’s impact on trading and shareholder value. Approval from Kenyan authorities will signal the government’s stance toward foreign investment in strategic sectors like media.

The new owner’s background adds interest to the transaction. Rostam Azizi is a Tanzanian investor with interests across East Africa. His company’s commitment to maintaining NMG’s public-interest journalism tradition will be closely watched by media freedom advocates and industry observers.

For NMG employees, the ownership change introduces uncertainty but also potential opportunity. New investment could support growth, create jobs, and enhance the company’s competitive position. However, strategic shifts often bring organisational change that requires adaptation.
