Lagos State has taken a significant step towards sustainable waste management with the launch of a biodigester plant at Ikosi Fruit Market.
The plant, delivered through a partnership with C40 Cities and support from UK International Development, converts organic market waste into biogas for cooking and electricity, and fertilizer for farmers.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, highlighted the project’s impact on addressing environmental challenges in the Ikosi community.
The market generates tons of organic waste daily, which previously ended up in drains and dumpsites, releasing methane into the atmosphere.
The biodigester plant tackles this issue, converting waste into valuable resources.
This initiative aligns with Lagos’ broader waste-to-energy strategy, including partnerships with foreign firms to tackle specialized waste streams and scale up energy recovery.
The state has secured significant funding, including a €120 million commitment from the Netherlands, and plans to establish a $400 million Waste-to-Energy plant in Epe.
